Sure BioShock and Halo 3 look pretty, but are they really examples of "next generation" games?

Frontier Developments boss David Braben doesn't think so, and it's all because of the gameplay, not the graphics. Braben made the comments during an interview with Eurogamer where he made it a point to say his latest game, The Outsider, which he said will be one of the first real examples of fifth-generation gaming.

"I loved the 1930s-1950s atmosphere of BioShock: the lovely Art Deco visuals and the audio that worked especially well," Braben said. "Overall the whole game was beautifully executed, but the gameplay itself was not 'next-gen'."

Braben found Halo 3 great fun too, but he also found Master Chief's latest exploits "a little disappointing" too. "It was as though there were a few nice touches and improved graphical fidelity, but it hadn't really moved on much from Halo 2 in terms of the gameplay," he said.

Apparently Braben would prefer that a Big Daddy actually jump from the television and skewer him with its massive drill. A guy can dream, right?
