Sierra Entertainment says the open world action game will stay in prototype form until next year due to requiring further development.

"Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions," a Sierra representative told [[xref:http://www.gamespot.com/news/6190361.html|GameSpot|new] on Monday. "In the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create."

Prototype was originally scheduled for release this fall on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The GTA-clone centres around a shapeshifting anti-hero named Alex who clashes with military and mutants in the streets of New York City to unravel his past.

The title was recently named one of GamePro's most promising non-sequels of 2008.
