Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Geek Guide (Strategy)

01/12/2003 14:47:24

You know about the Light Side and Dark Side, about the Force powers, lightsabers, blasters, and about the branching storylines of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. What you might not know about is the geek-tastic math and hardcore stat-crunching behind the scenes, and knowing that sort of thing is the secret to really getting the most out of KOTOR.

KOTOR does a great job of keeping the hardcore math out of the way, so you can enjoy a game without worrying about it. Still, based as it is on Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars RPG, the system used to decide whether you hit, how much damage you do and so on is simple and easily worked to your advantage. You just need to know what everything means to manipulate it. The game shows you everything but the die rolls, and if you know what everything means, you can easily min-max your character and kick some real ass.

Note that, if you're interested, you can run down to your local gaming bookstore and pick up a copy of Star Wars RPG to get this info-everything I'll mention in this article is mentioned there, too.
