Rockstar Games announces Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (News)

Rockstar Games has announced Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PlayStation 2. Developed by Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will based in the West Coast. GTA:SA is being touted as a PlayStation 2 exclusive, but other consoles will likely see a release, seeing as the same thing was initially said about Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

"In the past couple of years, we have put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure we do everything possible to exceed people's expectations with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," stated Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. "Even though we still have eight months to go, we are starting to become very proud of what we have achieved and we can't wait to get the game into players' hands."

San Andreas in the original was a Los Angeles/San Francisco hybrid city, which will probably be reflected in GTA: San Andreas. With Vice City focusing on the Italian mafia, it wouldn't be surprising if San Andreas focuses more on hip hop and gangsta culture - the San Andreas logo uses the same style of font as El Burro's "Diablo" tattoo inscribed on his stomach.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PlayStation 2 is slated for release in North America on October 19 and Europe/Australia on October 22, 2004. Expect nothing less than an MA15+ classification.
