"Can anyone explain to me how having one console would be bad for gamers?" writes David Jaffe on his personal blog. "We have [one hardware standard] with DVD, we had it with VHS. We have it with televisions. So what do we lose by having it for game consoles?

Jaffe argues that innovation wouldn't be stiffened so long as there are multiple publishers and developers. To be clear, he is not in favour of a single manufacturer making the universal console, but having a standard that all manufacturers must follow.

Talk of a one-console future started last year as EA's Gerhard Florin and Silicon Knights developer Denis Dyack backed the initiative, however unrealistic. In theory, a universal console would help reduce the financial risk of making and selling games.
