Complete NPD data obtained by IGN reveals that Wii owners purchased 8.1 games for every system sold in the month of December, the most of any system. By comparison, Xbox 360 owners bought 7.8 games per console, while PS3 owners scooped up 5 games per console.
The Xbox 360, released a full year before both Wii and PS3, still leads life to date attach rates with 7 games per system sold, followed by Wii with 4.6 games per system, and PS3 with 4.3 games per system, according to NPD data.
Attach rates are a good short-term indicator when determining how enthusiastic console owners may be. Over time, however, these figures historically even out. For example, the PS2, which lapped combined Xbox and GameCube sales several times, has a current tie ratio of 11.3, followed by 10.9 for Xbox, and 9.3 for GameCube.
Speaking of GameCube, Nintendo reported on Friday that after just 14 months of availability, the Wii has sold an impressive 20 million units, just 1.7 million shy of total GameCube sales over six years.
