OutRun 2 isn't so much a sequel as it is a polished version of the 1986 Sega arcade original. It's packed with fast paced action, just like the first, a strong focus on arcade style play, just like the first, and you drive nothing but Ferraris, just like the first.
What is new though is the single player OutRun Mission mode which features over 100 races on 16 different tracks. Even though you can play the original OutRun arcade game, there's a whole new focus on mission based races and players now have a choice of eight different Ferraris to drive, ranging from the Testarossa to the F40. Instead of just reaching checkpoints within a specific time, you're now out to please your girlfriend who's riding shotgun.
By meeting her demands you win hearts that act as a rating system and determine your end of race score and the wrath of your girlfriend. The demands and missions tend to get repetitive and you'll be playing not out of addiction but rather to quell your obsessive compulsive urges.
Even with its online support, players will be feeling let down with the offline multiplayer options. Although gamers can battle each other in a multiplayer one-at-a-time take on the single player mode, there is no split screen action for simultaneous head-to-head action.
Despite its flaws, OutRun 2 is the epitome of arcade racing. The controls are ridiculously simple, there's absolutely no attention paid to car or player damage, and there's no story mode or specific goal. The ability to drift is the only standout feature that will bring gamers back for more asphalt ripping action.
Verdict
This once great arcade game suffers in its transition to Xbox. Even hardcore Outrun fans should consider renting before purchase.
Pros:A faithful adaptation and cool tweak of an arcade classic. Drifting!
Cons:Repetitive race goals, and lack of depth. Offline multiplayer is lame.
Score = 6.0/10
