Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero Review: Old, But Still Gold!

Serious headphones, for serious PC gamers.

Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero Review Verdict
For PC (with limited functionality for Xbox One), the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero wireless gaming headset offers a comfortable fit, good audio quality, and solid simulated surround sound.

Don't be fooled by it's release date. Despite being nearly 4 years old, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero is just as good as some of the more recently released gaming headsets for PC. If you're looking for an entry to mid-range PC gaming headset, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero is still a great purchase.

Whether shooting zombies or exploring Ezio’s memories, it quickly came to my attention during testing that the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero will ensure you have great spatial awareness. Granted, it’s capabilities with spatial awareness are not at the level of audiophile headphones. Yet, when combined with a moderately balanced sound output, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero provided an enjoyable experience, to say the least.

Despite its age, the Elite Atlas Aero is still a top wireless gaming headset that still garners a respectable amount of attention. But does it meet all the demands of an active gamer in 2024? Find out everything you need to know as I explore all the features of the Atlas Aero in this comprehensive review.

Elite Atlas Aero Design

Personally, I really enjoyed the design of the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero Wireless headset. As a straightforward and detailed-oriented product that features the headset, metal bridges and frames, the Atlas Aero sits well on your ears. Unlike budget gaming headsets, what you get when you spend over $200 is a guaranteed solid build. Although slightly heavier than alternative gaming headsets, I actually felt more comfortable during longer periods of gaming. Perhaps because I knew they wouldn’t break! 🙂

In addition to a sturdy frame, the Atlas Aero headset features suspended padding. Despite adding additional comfort, should you have bulky hair, it can be a little uncomfortable at times. Then, there are the swappable gel-infused foam ear cups. Known as “athletic fabric”, I found the earcups extremely comfortable as expected with most quality headsets.

On the left ear cup, you will see various input options, controls, and buttons for the so-called Superhuman Hearing mode. Added to this are the 3.50mm audio jack, mic jack, MicroUSB port for charging, and the volume wheel for both the audio and microphone. There are plenty of options for connectivity to both PC & Mac. However, for console players, you will need to forego wireless connectivity and use the cable that is provided.

Last but not least, the Atlas Aero headset comes with ProSpecs design. This means that you can wear your glasses comfortably without the earcups placing pressure on them whilst you are playing. Combine this with the fact that the Atlas Aero is extremely portable (folding down into a neat little package), Turtle Beach has really thought of everything

I like to hang my Turtle Beach Atlas Aero headset over the top of my Secretlab Titan 2020 Gaming Chair. The slick black colour abreast my gold embroidered chair too my gaming setup to a new level.

Sound & Audio Quality

Sound quality is possibly the most important aspect of any superb gaming headset. After all, when you are immersed within a game, you kind of forget about the comfortability of your headset. In this regard, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero delivers on all fronts. Not only will gamers enjoy the sound quality, but music lovers (of less bassy tracks) will also enjoy every note.

For a headset that is primarily made for video gaming, the capabilities are impressive for music when playing at maximum level without distortion. One thing I did notice was that when playing sounds of a lower frequency, the headset was not overly powerful. However, for sounds such as the deepness of a kick drum, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero Wireless headset delivers a solid thump.

Overall, the Atlas Aero’s audio is impressive. Complete with Waves NX 3D audio, you can enjoy your games with remarkable 360-degree sound. Okay, Waves NX does not support motion tracking, however, the 360-degree experience delivers excellent spatial awareness.

If you’re not 100% happy with the sound out of the box, the Turtle Beach Atlas Aero headset also comes with sound controls and sliders. These controls allow you to further customise bass, game dialogue, treble, mic dialogue, and even noise gate threshold and variable microphone monitoring.

Microphone

Then, there is the noise-cancelling, TruSpeak™ microphone.

To be honest, the microphone is a little sensitive. However, that is much better than having to shout at your teammates. I recommend playing in an environment with minimal background noise. Yes, time to order your housemates to stop vacuuming during game time. That said, should background noise be a problem, the Turtle Beach Atlas Aero comes with a range of customisable settings.

From audio to microphone settings, you should be able to capture your vocals clearly with minimal disruption from your household.

Wireless Connectivity & Battery

At full charge, the Turtle Beach Atlas Aero gaming headset will survive for around 30 hours. Over time, just like most wireless headsets, you can expect this battery life to slightly diminish. I don’t think I have ever experienced a wireless headset that lives up to the full battery time forever.

As for connectivity, the Turtle Beach Atlas Aero headset is 100% wireless for PC & Mac. You can connect via Bluetooth, however, I recommend connecting via the provided wireless USB transmitter. For console users, wireless support is not provided as this is primarily a PC gaming headset. Overall, connecting the headset is easy and extremely stable.

Elite Atlas Aero Price

The Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero headphones are all yours for $230 AUD. Currently, you can purchase from Amazon and any major Australian tech retailer such as JB-HiFi. When you consider that these headphones are wireless, come packed with customisable audio/voice options and are complete with Waves NX, the overall package is of great value. Okay, so they are nothing compared to the more expensive SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless headphones, however, at this price, you will be extremely happy.

The Not So Fancy

One of the absolutely glaring disadvantages of the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero headset is its wireless capability. Solely for PC, the Atlas Aero gaming headset will require some bootstrapping to work on consoles. Additionally, many users have reported that the headphones lack bass. If you’re heavy on playing popular FPS games, any lack of bass will nullify your experience. However, for anything that is not run and gun, reduced bass can actually be a pleasant improvement.

Finally, while 360-degree sound delivers an impressive experience, there is no motion tracking with Waves NX. For any games that require you to understand distance, as well as location, this can be a hindrance. Besides this, the Turtle Beach Atlas Aero delivers a very impressive all-around experience.

The Bottom Line

Compared to Xbox’s other major line of gaming headsets, the Astro A50 Gen 4, the Elite Atlas Aero is not as powerful. In fact, it’s also slightly weaker than the Elite Pro 2 headset. However, for the price, it’s a very compelling option for PC gamers. As a wireless gaming headset complete with waves NX simulated sound and extensive audio customisation, you will not be disappointed. While not particularly bass-heavy, this actually delivers a slightly different experience to your typical gaming headset which in some games I like.

For console players, no matter how much your love Turtle Beach, this headphone is a miss. There are many alternative headphones available that seamlessly work with both PC and console. As such, bootstrapping the Elite Atlas Aero to play your Xbox One exclusive seems too much work to be worth the investment. It’s a shame, I would have loved to have tested the Elite Atlas Aero headset whilst playing Forza Motorsport.

  1. I love this headset and have been using it since they came out, recently bought a new pair just to have as backup The only downside is you can’t use the software with Windows 11 it only works with 10. So no adjusting anything which makes me want to roll back to Windows 10.
