The poisonous gas in Baldur’s Gate 3 on the pathway to Ethel’s hideout presents a challenging obstacle to overcome. Also known as noxious fumes, this gas is expelled via vents; filling the area with toxic gas. What’s more, the vents also contain unique flowers which, when triggered, will explode and cause explosion damage.

With each turn causing at least 1d4 damage, Noxious Fumes in Baldur’s Gate 3 are something you want to avoid in the early game as the damage is devastating.

However, once you discern the vent rhythms and know how to manage them, accessing Ethel’s hideout is relatively straightforward. Here’s a detailed walkthrough and step-by-step guide on how to get past Noxious Fumes in Baldur’s Gate 3. 👇

How To Clear Noxious Fumes In BG3

How To Get Past Noxious Fumes In Baldur’s Gate 3?

To remove the poisonous fumes in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will have to follow a logical process. First, you should destroy the flowers to stop them from exploding by shooting them with any ranged weapon from a distance. Then, once the flowers are out of harm’s way, it’s time to block the vents with an item that you can find to stop the poisonous gas from filling the area.

As the explosion settles, look for a small rock formation within the fumes and throw an object that is of suitable size to block the vents. Items such as clothes are great to throw into here. After a few seconds, the fumes will dissipate from the area and you’re free to walk through to the next vent.

Once you have figured out the pattern sequence, you can actually reach Haig’s Lair without taking any damage at all and we have the step-by-step guide for you right here.

To get past Noxious Fumes in Baldur’s Gate 3, follow these 9 simple steps:

  • Step 1: First, get close to the fumes without entering into it.
  • Step 2: Next, look for the vent that expels the gas and the flowers that ignite it.
  • Step 3: Back away and use any ranged attack to explode the flowers.
  • Step 4: Wait for the flames to subside.
  • Step 5: Once the flames have subsided the gas will come back, but not the flowers
  • Step 6: Now, throw any item to block the vent and subsequent gas.
  • Step 7: Once the vent is blocked, wait for the gas around you to vanish.
  • Step 8: As soon as the gas has vanished, you can walk past the infected area.
  • Step 9: Repeat the process for each infected area until you read the end.

The Final Word

If you are struggling with blocking the items of a suitable size, you can also use the Gust of Wind spell to clear the poison clouds, however, you will still need to shoot the flowers with a ranged weapon prior to walking past the vents.

After you have walked past each poisonous vent, you should be at the Hag’s lair, where you’ll discover Mayrina in a cage and Auntie Ethel prowling about. Things can go very differently here depending on the approach taken next by the player – but that applies throughout the entire Baldur’s Gate 3 game.

Noxious Fumes FAQs

Do you have further questions about Noxious Fumes? No sweat, here are the most commonly asked questions we receive.

How much damage do noxious fumes deal?
Unlike poison clouds in Baldur’s Gate 3 which impose disadvantages on attack rolls, noxious fumes will deliver damage to your character each turn. At first, when you walk through noxious fumes, they will deliver 1d4 damage. However, they will start to deliver 2d4 damage over time. So, you definitely don’t want to be hanging around them for too long without blocking the vents.
What is the best item to block noxious fume vents?
The best items to use to block noxious fume vents will typically be items that you no longer want. After all, once you use this item, you cannot retrieve it back into your inventory. Typically, items of clothing, goblin scimitars or scrap pieces of wood work well to block the vents. In addition, these are low value items that are easily collectable in the game should you want to use them in the future.
