Ready to start your journey towards level 713? Let’s get started! 👇

How to Level Up In Elden Ring?

To gain access to Elden Ring’s levelling system, first, a certain cutscene with an NPC named Melina needs to be triggered. Though it is possible to miss out on this entirely, it’s quite unlikely on your first playthrough.

To level up in Elden Ring, follow these 8 simple steps:

  • Step 1: At the starting area of the game, head north on the main pathway.
  • Step 2: Locate the Gatefront Site of Grace in Limgrave.
  • Step 3: Rest at this Site of Grace to trigger an interaction with Melina.
  • Step 4: Accept Melina’s offer to become your Maiden.
  • Step 5: Exit the Site of Grace to unlock the ability to level up.
  • Step 6: Collect some runes by defeating enemies or using consumables.
  • Step 7: Once you have some runes, rest at any Site of Grace.
  • Step 8: Select the option to ”Level Up” your character.

If, by some miracle, you have already managed to stroll straight past the Gatefront Site of Grace without interacting with it, it is also possible to encounter Melina while resting at Agheel Lake North Site of Grace. However, the Gatefront Site of Grace is directly north on the main path and very hard to miss.

After you’ve gotten enough runes to raise your Tarnished’s level, rest at any Site of Grace and the Level Up option should be available. When levelling up, you will have to choose one of your stats to raise. Each stat will have a different effect and there are eight to choose from (Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith & Arcane).

Note that if you decline Melina’s offer, you will remain unable to level up. However, you can still encounter Melina to change your answer by resting at either of the two Sites of Grace mentioned above. This is also an important step to unlock your trusty steed Torrent who, you are definitely going to need.

Max Level Elden Ring - Level 713

What Is The Max Level In Elden Ring?

Another feature that Elden Ring deploys which is similar to most other RPG & JRPG games is a maximum level cap. The maximum level you can reach in Elden Ring is level 713. This is achievable when you level up each of your statistics to level 99.

If you want to calculate how many runes you need to level up in Elden Ring, there’s a pretty cool website that features an Elden Ring rune calculator to make light work of this.

Just remember, focus your runes on the type of build that you want to create.

Best Stats To Level Up In Elden Ring

So now that you can use the levelling system in Elden Ring, how do you use it?

First of all, you will need to spend runes to raise your character’s level. This is the game’s main currency and you can obtain it by killing enemies or using certain consumables. Over time, the cost to level up a single attribute will significantly increase. Therefore, you would be wise to follow our guide on rune farming locations to bank yourself more runes than you can carry before venturing deep into the realm.

However, when it comes to choosing the best stats to level up in Elden Ring, your choice will ultimately be dependent on what type of build you want to create. While you do get the ability to reallocate your stats later on, focusing on certain stats right from the start will help make things easier for you in both the early and later stages of the game.

For new players, the best stats to level up in Elden Ring are:

  1. Endurance
  2. Vigor
  3. Dexterity
  4. Strength
  5. Faith

Endurance

As you would expect, the Endurance stat in Elden Ring directly affects your Stamina during battle. Stamina is arguably the most important resource you’ll have during combat since it is used to perform actions like taking a swing at your enemies and dodging their attacks.

Enhancing endurance will also increase your Equip Load stat. Of which, having a higher equip load stat means you can wear heavier gear before it negatively impacts your evasive rolls. For any new Elden Ring players, while the Endurance statistic might seem a little boring, it will always be a top priority regardless of what class or build you’ve chosen for your Tarnished.

Trust me, you’re going to need to roll around a lot!

Vigor

Some would say that you don’t actually beat a game like Elden Ring, but instead survive it. Increasing your Vigor stat will help you with exactly that – surviving.

Vigor offers you resistance to things like fire damage and poison, but its main benefit is that it increases your maximum HP. More HP means it’ll take enemies longer to strike you down and that extra bit of health might just be the difference between clearing an area or being sent back to a Site of Grace; minus some runes.

Just like endurance, Vigor will always be one of the best statistics to upgrade in Elden Ring no matter what class you decide to focus the rest of your runes towards.

Dexterity

Weapons, or Armaments as they are known in Elden Ring, have certain stat requirements that revolve around dexterity or strength before you can equip them. While strength primarily influences the amount of damage your weapons deal, dexterity can also raise your damage output depending on the type of weapon you are using.

Dexterity also offers some utility in that it can reduce the casting time of spells and lessen fall damage. Having high dexterity also makes it harder to get knocked off of your mount.

If you are looking to wield some of the better faith weapons in Elden Ring, focussing on levelling up Dexterity makes for a potent Faith/Dex combination that breeds some of the best battles in the Lands Between.

Strength

Just like dexterity, strength allows you to wield certain Armaments and influences the amount of damage you can do with them. It also has an effect on your physical defences, which, need I remind you, you’re going to need them!

The strength statistic is unique in that it is the only one that levelled up past 99. When you wield a single weapon with both hands, you can go all the way up to 150-strength with the right equipment.

When you see a fellow Elden Ring player showboating over their level 713 account, we guarantee they haven’t got strength tapped all the way to the maximum. Why? Because you can only reach level 713 with every statistic set at 99 points. So, if you’re a strength build with strength scaling weapons, you might have the upper hand in combat.

Faith

As the fifth and final best statistic to level up in Elden Ring, the faith stat determines how effective you are at casting Incantations. Incantations are spells that have more supportive effects like restoring health, curing status effects, and enchanting weapons.

In order to cast Incantations, your Tarnished will need to be equipped with a Sacred Seal, which is another type of weapon in Elden ring. Incantations can be learned from several NPCs you will encounter on your journey.

Final Levelling Tips

While focusing on the stats listed above will serve you well during your time in the Lands Between, you shouldn’t ignore the remaining three of intelligence, mind, and arcane.

You can opt to focus on intelligence instead of strength if you are looking to use a more magic-centred build for offence. If that’s the case then you’d also want to consider raising your mind as it has a direct impact on your total FP, which is Elden Ring’s equivalent to mana or MP in other games.

And finally, the arcane stat is a bit niche in that it helps you resist specific damage types and helps find more items while exploring the Lands Between. While not particularly useful for your build, the indirect benefits of finding more runes do positively impact your experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about how to level up in Elden Ring? No sweat! Here are the most commonly asked questions we receive about ranking up Elden Ring.

Can you reset levels in Elden Ring?

Yes, thankfully, you can reset levels in Elden Ring. Although you cannot delete statistics, you can respec your character and redistribute statistics to other traits. To reset your levels in Elden Ring, first, you must defeat Rennala. After defeating Rennala, she will become passive and relax inside her boss arena. Simply talk to Rennala and exchange one Larval Tear for each time that you want to reset your levels.

How to level up early in Elden Ring?

To level up early in Elden Ring, you want to focus on rune farms and collecting Smithstones. One of the best rune farms for levelling up early can, surprisingly, be found at a higher-level location which is accessible through a warp gate. To reach it, you must navigate your way to the Third Church of Marika in East Limgrave. The simplest route is starting at the Gate Front Site of Grace and following the eastern road path. After crossing a bridge, proceed north along the path until you reach the church. Although this location is beyond the first map fragment, you can obtain the map fragment for East Limgrave by continuing on the path after reaching the Third Church of Marika.

Once you arrive at the Third Church of Marika, enter the building and activate the Lost Grace. While you’re there, make sure to acquire the Flask of Wondrous Physik. Head towards the river on the church’s northern side and follow it east until you discover a warp gate concealed behind some trees. Through this warp gate, you will be transported to the Bestial Sanctum.

How to level up summons in Elden Ring?

To level up summons in Elden Ring, first, you must progress through Roderika’s quest line. Once you have completed this questline, you will be able to find the NPC Roderika at Roundtable Hold. Once you have located Roderika, you will need to use Grave Glovewort or Ghost Glovewort items in conjunction with runes to upgrade your summons.

Unfortunately, upgrading your summons is not available from the start of the game.

How to level up spirits in Elden Ring?

Similarly to upgrading summons, you can level up spirits in Elden Ring by trading Glovewort items and Runes to Roderika at Roundtable Hold. Roderika can be found at the blown-out building on the road from Limgrave to Stormveil Castle. To transfer Roderika to Roundtable Hold, you will need to complete the Roderika questline. Without completing this, Roderika will not be available at Roundtable Hold to upgrade your spirits.

Can you level up armour in Elden Ring?

Unlike traits, weapons, spirits and summons, armour is unfortunately not available to upgrade in Elden Ring. That said, boosting shields will improve defensive abilities; despite the fact that armour will always remain at the same level. Therefore, you should focus your attention on levelling up your traits and weapons.
