HDMI Consortium is preparing to add 3D support to its latest 1.4 specification, which could bring 3D gaming and movie watching to high-definition TVs.
HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) ports connect external devices like set-top boxes or gaming consoles to displays like TV sets. Many of the HDMI ports are based on the 1.3 specification that do not support TV, but the upcoming ports based on the latest specification will support 3D.
The HDMI Consortium on Wednesday said it would meet in late January to add an additional 3D format to the HDMI 1.4 spec. Once the consortium decides on the format, it would be mandatory for consumer electronics makers to implement ports with 3D support in devices like set-top boxes and TVs.
The 3D market is growing as TV makers and consumer electronics companies throw support behind it. Sony is expected to broadcast the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 2D and 3D, and the company has already announced 3D TVs in the past. The Korea Communications Commission announced plans to start a 3D broadcast trial service in the second half of 2010.
Samsung and other TV makers are expected show 3D TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show that will be held in Las Vegas from Jan. 7-10. LG has said it expects to ship close to 400,000 3D-capable TVs next year.
The Blu-ray Disc Association has also finalized the 3D disc specification, which could bring 3D movies and games on discs soon. Companies including Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia plan to showcase stereoscopic 3D Blu-ray video at CES.
"3D is a nascent market and thus continues to evolve quickly," said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing in a statement. "The addition of the new format will secure the application of 3D for broadcasting, in addition to the existing applications for Blu-ray and gaming."
The support for 3D may be evaluated again once a mandatory format is defined to broadcast 3D images, the consortium said in a statement.

EVERYONE'S GETTING READY FOR 3D JUST LOOK!
1. Sky is going to launch Sky 3D anytime soon.
2. Sony are going to begin the production of 3DTVs at 2010.
3. The Sony PlayStation 3 is going to have 3D Support for EVERY Single Game Released, I thought this was bogus till I learnt how easy it was to do it, I thought it would take months of work, but in fact it's all done by computer modelling simulations.
4. Disney have currently produced the most 3D Movies till date.
5. Blu-ray 3D Discs have been developed and won't require any new blu-ray player, it's fully compatible with the old blu-ray drives you have now.
6. Whilst Toshiba and the other companies are developing the Hologram Disc (1Tb, that's right, 1 Terbyte) for the new Microsoft Consoles, I bet that Sony's producing the blu-ray Hologram Disc, (The blu-ray disc can store 5x more than the dual-layed DVD) so the blu-ray Hologram disc is presumably 5Tb!
7. Sony can therefore launch UHD 3D Movies.
8. A new PS3 nor new hardware will not be required to play games in 3D, only a 3DTV and HDMI Cable 1.4 if I'm correct after reading this article would be neccessary.
ps3 is hdmi 1.3 compliant .. wont ever be hdmi 1.4 without a redesign
Actually PS3 can become 1.4 compliant with a very simple FIRMWARE update. When PS3 lauched it was not 1.4 but with a series of FIRMWARE updates it is now 1.3a compliant. GOOGLE is your friend!
@psfan the PS3 is HDMI 1.3 compliant but with a firmware update Sony could make it HDMI 1.4. The numbers are just what update they are on just like the PS3's firmware updates.
nice site design man.
3D is sick
im really looking forward to 3D games, movies and TV shows.
BUT!
problem being you have to buy a new 3D compatible TV to take advantage of it.
sigh!
most people have just bought a HD TV in the last 12 months, because up until then they were dear as poison.
i just bought me a HD TV in june this year, and wont be buying a new TV for at least another 3 years.
if companies some how find a way to make current 100HZ TVs compatible with 3D than it will take off very quickly.
but if you need to buy a new TV and new bluray player to take advantage of this its going to be a massive flop.
i dont know about sony and other TV manufactures but i dont have 2 thousand dollars to spend on a TV every few years.
maybe there forgetting were in a recession and the unemployment rate is higher than its been in a very, very long time.
most people are scraping to keep food on the table, and petrol in their cars, let alone a new TV and bluray player.
@Name
You make a good point here. I bought myself a PS3 by launch and a Full HD LCD Tv a year ago. I dont have the money to buy a new tv every year let alone a new bluray player. I use the PS3 for that. I live in Holland and a common LCD Tv cost like 600 euro here (862,40 US Dollar. Living in Holland is very expensive and i saw the prices for the upcoming 3d televisions in our local multimedia center. They are being sold for the price of $ 3597.5 U.S. dollars
wich is 2500 euro´s. These prices are more or less a prediction but they never lie..
I hope they can make the LCD into a 3d with a upgrade or something....
ive been looking around at a few stores latley for a TV with a friend of mine, since he does not have a HD set yet.
and ive asked every store about the 3D TVs due to release late next year, and most have said i know nothing, but some have said they will be 300-500 dollars more than their equivalent.
IF thats true, thats not too bad since HD TVs are now in a decent price range.
but still, IF that is true i wont be buying one for at least another 4 years.
theres no way there going to be 2600 US dollars, for that price you can get a 60 inch sony XBR, or a larger samsung LED TV.
for that price you can get the best of the best.
if thats the price for a big 3D TV, like 50 inch ok, but any smaller than that, they should not be that expensive.
im hoping 32 inch 1080P 3D TVs are no more than 1700 US dollars
There are already 3D HDTV's available for less than $1200... not bad at all. In fact the Mitsubishi 60" DLP is less than $1200... for a freaking 60 inch! That's great! Now sure, the new 3D HDTV's will likely be more expensive b/c they will be newer... but even those will come down in price w/in another 2 yrs or so.
@name, just because some people have new TV's and can't turn around to buy a new one, doesn't mean it will be a flop at all. That's like saying all of last years sets would be a flop. Instead they put the 3D sets out. And whoever is in need of a new TV will be more tempted to get one. By the time 5 years go by, people who bought a new HD last year might reconsider since their set would be 6 yeras old by then. But point is, they put the 3d out, and eventually, a little at time, people get them as needed.
@Carvega, the Mits are a good deal at that price. I have been considering one, but am also tempted by the new LCD big screens coming out late summer. The only thing is I heard the Mitsubishi might not be able to disply 3d in full HD while in the 3d mode. So that's why I'm interested in this 72 inch lcd I heard of.
